Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Research and Planning
This stage
of my coursework was where I made most use of the new technologies and
especially media 2.0. When it came to looking at other music videos and finding
inspiration, media 2.0 really came in with all of the social networking sites
that can be used and the video streaming site ‘YouTube’ was showing to be the
most effective material. By using ‘YouTube’ we were able to look at some of the
other videos that have been made for the group already which has given us some
of our inspiration. As ‘YouTube’ is a global site it means that there is a wide
variety of music that I could like at and as the song that we have chosen is
indie this means that I was able to look at a variety of different indie music
videos. By using ‘YouTube’ it made it very easy to look at different music
videos and made it a lot easier to try and understand the ‘Indie’ genre conventions
and then try and be inspired by them to make something more original.
Something
else that I used for my Research and Planning part was Prezi. I used Prezi in
the very early stages of my coursework to create a pitch to the rest of my
class. By using Prezi to present my pitch I was able to collect images of my
target audience and arrange them however I like and put text over the top.
Another thing that is easy to do with Prezi is to upload a YouTube clip which
can be placed anywhere. There were a few
problems when it came to using Prezi
as it
sometimes wouldn’t load which caused a bit
problem when it came to do my
pitch.
For the
making of my magazine advert and Digipak I used Adobe Photoshop for both of
them and used the tools that were available to me. I decided to use Adobe
Photoshop as I was familiar with how to use it before starting my coursework.
With Adobe Photoshop I found it very easy to get the correct font and size,
something that I learnt whilst doing my Digipak was how to put shadowing around
the words and to make them stand out from the background. By using Photoshop it
was easy to put four photos onto the same page and experiment with all of the
options that I had. On the back of the Digipak I put three little dots in
between the songs. I got this idea from another Digipak that I had looked at
which was my influence for the idea.
When it came
to filming the music video the camera that we used to film the whole thing was
a Panasonic HDV camera which is very easy to use and is of a high quality. The
one thing that I found quite hard to do was zoom in at a constant speed, I
found it would zoom in too fast. This camera was very easy to attach to a
tri-pod which made it a lot easier on us to get different angles and smooth
panning. All of the clips go onto a SD card which makes it a lot easier to put
onto the computer as there is a SD card slot on the computers at college.
The
computing software that I used for editing my music video was Adobe Premier
Pro. The file format that the video is in to start with is AVI which stands for
Audio Visual and when we have to export it to YouTube we had to convert it to a
FLV which stands for Flash Video. When it is in an AVI file it is uncompressed
which means that the wave lengths are really big, and too big to import onto YouTube
so when you convert it to a FLV file it compresses it so that it is able to go
onto YouTube. I had never used Premier Pro before doing this course so it was
all new for me, and one thing that I found out whilst making my music video was
how to either speed up the duration of the clip or slow it down.
For
organizing this music video and keeping up to date on my blog, my IPhone came
in a lot of use. I was able to download a blogger app onto my phone which meant
that I could blog where ever I wanted to and this would keep me organized. Also
by having my IPhone, when it came to lip syncing we had to play the music so
that he could sing along to it and by my IPhone being a MP3 player as well came
in very useful.
Question 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Challenge: One major thing that we decided not to do in our music
video was the narrative story. The reason why we decided not to do the
narrative is because after we had done all of the filming with the band we
thought it looked a lot better if we just had the band performing but also we
thought it would appeal more to an Indie genre without the narrative.
Also the narrative that we were going to do was a bit cliché and was
heading away from the Indie genre.
